The Mathematics programme progresses from discovering and learning concepts using manipulative materials to the application of abstract ideas. At the Kindergarten level, children learn to sort and classify objects, construct and interpret simple pictographs, demonstrate an awareness of length, volume, mass and time, and are able to recognize and name plain shapes. With this as a base, the students enlarge their awareness and understanding of mathematical concepts to the point where in Grade VI they are expected to have learned skills in the following areas: sets, numeration, operations and properties, geometry and measurement, through a problem solving approach.
As problem-solving plays a key role in mathematics learning, it is an important focus all through the elementary school programme. Problem solving helps children develop thinking skills, and helps them to develop a growing number of different strategies which they can apply to everyday life situations.
Mathematics is taught in Cycles I, II and III.
